Description:

North America, Western United States, South Dakota, Oglala Lakota County, Brule Formation, Oligocene to early Miocene, ca. 33.9 to 16.3 million years ago. A fossilized skull of Leptauchenia nitida, a type of oreodont, still embedded in its natural matrix, with the stone block serving as a stable display base. This specimen is especially noteworthy for preserving several of the front incisors - an uncommon feature in most known examples, likely lost through natural wear during the animal's life or subsequent fossilization processes. Oreodonts were stocky ungulates with traits often likened to camels or pigs, and as herbivores they roamed the North American grasslands in herds. The positioning of Leptauchenia's eyes and nostrils once led researchers to believe they were semiaquatic, but more recent studies suggest these adaptations were better suited to arid, sandy environments. The widespread abundance of Leptauchenia fossils underscores the species' success and its important role within the ecosystems of the Oligocene. Size: 5" L x 3" W (12.7 cm x 7.6 cm)

Provenance: private New Jersey, USA collection, found in 1969 in , Oglala Lakota (Shannon) County, South Dakota, USA.
