Description:

Central Asia, Upper Miocene, ca. 11.6 to 3.6 million years ago. A fossilized upper skull from a prehistoric rhinoceros species known as Sinotherium lagrelii, a single horned rhino that had a unique "in-between" placement of the horn! The back of the head around the occipital bone is encased in a stone matrix that is sliced to create base for the skull to stand vertically on; the teeth on full display to view their characteristic hollowed cavities that form what is often described as a "smiling face." Sinotherium's horn was located on the "naso-frontal" area, demonstrating the gradual shift from nasal to frontal position that later rhino relatives (Elasmotherium) would have. Sinotherium are scarce, usually only fragments of skulls are discovered, this is rare opportunity to acquire an interesting upper from this rhino! Size: 15" L x 9" W x 8" H (38.1 cm x 22.9 cm x 20.3 cm)
