Description:

European, France, 19th century. Four 19th century French fashion plates mounted in antique gilt wood frames, including a plate from "Le Follet, Courrier des Salons, Journal des Modes" which featured the best fashion plate designers such as Adele Anais Toudouze and Laure Noel, two of the three Colin sisters. Several of these were published in England. "The Lady's Magazine" for example was the first British magazine to import French plates before editions were produced in Italy, England, and Germany starting in the 1840s. Fashion plates were hand-colored engravings that appeared in weekly or monthly journals, typically one or two per issue. Each plate presents the current styles of dress and clothing, and features the designers, dressmakers, or stores that sold such fashions. Today the term "fashion plate" has come to refer to an especially fashionable person. Four 19th c. French fashion plates in antique gold tone frames carved with a lovely egg-and-dart pattern. Size (sight view of largest - but all close in size): 7.75" L x 5.25" W (19.7 cm x 13.3 cm) Size (frames): 12" L x 9.5" W (30.5 cm x 24.1 cm)
