East Asia, China, Ming Dynasty, ca. 1368 to 1644 CE. An ensemble of four standing male attendants, three modeled with different implements in their hands, ready to serve or entertain the deceased in the afterlife. The figures are clothed in long robes adorned in lustrous green sancai glaze, with hands and faces left unglazed and later cold-painted to enhance their lifelike presence. Each figure stands atop an integral rectangular plinth base, their hands holding various courtly attributes including a fan and possibly a drum. The surface displays excellent preservation of glaze and form. These figures exemplify the Ming emphasis on ritual burial accompaniments and the belief in a richly provisioned afterlife.
