Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Roman, ca. 1st century BCE to 4th century CE. A mesmerizing ensemble of ancient high karat (22+) gold earrings, including a lunar hoop , a hemispheric form, a larger though deformed hollow form hoop with wire attachments, and a section of an elaborate dangler with a band of meandering filagree and incomplete danglers. Total weight: 3.3 grams Size: dangler with meandering filagree design measures .75" L x .875" W (1.9 cm x 2.2 cm)

Although this group does not include any matched pairs, it does feature two forms invented by the Romans, those being the hoop earring and the hemisphere. The hoop form originated in 3rd century BCE, and while many ancient Roman jewelry designs resembled those of the Greeks and the Egyptians, the hemispheric motif was also a purely Roman creation.
