Description:

Western Europe, Great Britain, southern England, Dorset, late Medieval Period, ca. 14th century CE. A fine example of a forged-iron riding sword worn when at court, in the presence of royalty, or on a hunt. The double-edged blade boasts a slender profile with a shallow midrib that courses down to the rounded tip which enabled its suppleness and flexibility as well as a lightweight design that would not encumber the wearer. The gently curved guard features tapering quillons that flank the narrow handle and tinned bronze wheel pommel. Riding swords like this example were not meant to be carried into battle due to their relative fragility versus iron or steel armor but faired exceptionally well against hunted prey. Size (sword): 31.25" L x 6.375" W (79.4 cm x 16.2 cm); (frame): 36.8" L x 10.25" W (93.5 cm x 26 cm)
