Description:

**Originally Listed At $400**

Latin America, Mexico, ca. late 19th century CE. A sweet retablo of San Expedito (Saint Expeditus) hand painted on heavy gauge tin. This endearing saing is depicted as a classical warrior with the palm of martyrdom in one hand and a golden Cross in the other. He steps on a crow who says "Cras" meaning tomorrow. Fittingly, Expeditus is the patron saint of procrastination and resembles Mercury with a raven substituted for Mercury's rooster and a Cross substituted for his caduceus. San Expedito is a lesser known saint, almost forgotten in Mexico, but sometimes he is still called upon in cases of urgency. Size: 4.75" W x 6.875" H (12.1 cm x 17.5 cm); 9.375" W x 10.625" H (23.8 cm x 27 cm) with nicho

Provenance: ex House of Ancestors collection; ex private Galisteo New Mexico, USA collection

  • Condition: Diagonal crack across the glass. Nicho does not open; however, one could replace the glass and in doing so access the retablo if desired. Retablo has normal surface wear with slight scuffs and scratches. Nicho has indentations/creases to the lower end especially and expected age patina. Loop on verso of nicho for suspension.
