** A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this lot will benefit The Fowler Museum at UCLA **

Mexico, early to mid 20th century CE. A small painting of Christ, wearing the crown of thorns and a pink/red robe (originally may have been purple, which is the traditional color), holding one of the "instruments of the Passion", surrounded by beautiful and delicate lacework, some of it painted to show flowers, with a banner at the bottom reading "Ecce Homo". This is framed in gold, with a dark red matte. "Ecce homo" means "behold the man" in Latin, the words used by Pontius Pilate in the Vulgate translation of John 19:5 when he presents Jesus, crowned with thorns, to the angry crowd shortly before his Crucifixion. Size of painting: 2.95" W x 4.75" H (7.5 cm x 12.1 cm); size with frame: 5.45" W x 7.25" H (13.8 cm x 18.4 cm).
