Lot 121
Egypt, Coptic Culture, ca. 5th to 8th century CE. A rectangular textile fragment woven of linen and wool, preserved and presented in a wood and glass frame; the beige ground is decorated with adjoining medallions, solid bands, and geometric motifs executed in dark wool fibers, likely originally dyed in tones of red or purple with blue accents, now softened through age. The fragment was likely once part of a tunic panel or a funerary textile, as the deceased in Coptic burials were often dressed in their finest garments and accompanied by additional cloth coverings and cushions. Textiles of this type have survived in notable quantity due to Egypt's arid climate and the burial practices of Coptic Christians, which favored dry, sealed environments. Size of textile: 12" L x 5" W (30.5 cm x 12.7 cm); frame: 20" L x 12.75" W (50.8 cm x 32.4 cm)
Provenance: private Colorado, USA collection; ex-private Los Angeles, California, USA collection; ex-major gallery, Beverly Hills, California, USA, primarily acquired between 1985 and 2005
