Description:

Western Europe, France, ca. 1836 to 1848 CE. An excellent example of a French Model 1833 naval cutlass, featuring a robust closed cup iron hilt and a single-edged steel blade. Both sides of the blade are engraved with anchors above the ricasso. The guard is a fully enclosed knuckle bow or "cage" design, covered in its original black japanning, a protective lacquer applied during manufacture to prevent rusting. The spine is inscribed in cursive with "Manufacture Rle de Chatellerault," denoting royal manufacture under the monarchy (Rle = Royale = Royal). While the full date is partially rubbed, the visible "9bre" suggests it was made in November. This "Rle" marking confirms a production window between 1836 and 1848, after which "Rle" was replaced by "Nl" (for National). The quillon tab bears additional arsenal marks, though partially obscured by the japanning. A highly collectible naval weapon with the unmistakable silhouette of a swashbuckling pirate's blade. Size: 32" L x 4.5" W (81.3 cm x 11.4 cm); blade: 26.5" L x 1.5" W (67.3 cm x 3.8 cm)

This sword was part of a collection assembled by Alfred Atwater Blackman (1861-1928), an avid collector and connoisseur of historic arms. He was the grandson of Edwin Atwater (1808-1874), a prominent Canadian businessman and politician.

Provenance: private Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA collection, acquired via descent from grandfather, who collected from 1880 - 1910
