Description:

Fritz Anders (American, XX-XXI). "Racing the Setting Sun" pyrographic (wood burned) mosaic, n.d. Plaque on frame engraved with artist's signature and title of the piece. A large-scale pyrographic wood mosaic by Fritz Anders, depicting a group of wild horses running in a sublime landscape with mountains in the distance and birds flying in the skies above as the sun is setting. Anders' finely delineated composition is mesmerizing not only for its wondrous imagery and dreamy color palette, but also for the natural beauty of the wood. In his words, "Similar to seeing objects in the clouds the natural flow of the grain, the position of the knots and imperfections can mimic a variety of images. The image simply needs to be enhanced to bring it to life." A unique original wood mosaic mounted in a rustic wooden frame, handmade and designed by Anders to complement the piece. Size (mosaic): 22.375" L x 30.125" W (56.8 cm x 76.5 cm)

Artist Statement: "I love the process of finding and telling the hidden story in different woods and grain patterns. When an image appears to me, the process begins as I burn the details into the wood, highlighting the grain to develop the overall picture. Color is added using layers of thinned, and mixed stains. The color and grain are enhanced with multiple coats of varnish. Hand-made wood frames are custom designed to complement each piece. While I am always experimenting with new techniques in burning, staining, and finishing, it's the transformation of the piece that drives me to do this work. I strive for realism that portrays a presence, an experience, a moment in time. I enjoy adding a whimsical side to many of the picture, often reflected in the carefully chosen titles."
