Description:

Ancient Central Asia, Gandhara, ca. 3rd to 5th century CE. A Gandharan plaster fragment of a male figure, dating to the 3rd to 5th century CE. The bust captures a strong presence, with broad shoulders and a forward-leaning stance that conveys a sense of life and immediacy. The figure is defined by large, expressive eyes that animate the face and lend it a striking sense of character, framed by deeply incised hair that falls in locks over the shoulders. Plaster was widely employed in Gandhara alongside schist and stucco, often serving as architectural decoration within monasteries and shrines. Figures such as this would have originally formed part of a larger narrative frieze or sculptural ensemble illustrating Buddhist themes. The stylized musculature and expressive face reflect the hybrid Greco-Buddhist tradition of Gandhara, where classical Mediterranean forms merged with South Asian religious iconography. Size: 2.9" L x 4" W x 6.8" H (7.4 cm x 10.2 cm x 17.3 cm); 8.8" H (22.4 cm) on included custom stand.

Though time has worn away much of the surface detail, traces of modeling and proportion remain, offering a glimpse into the artistic richness of this ancient cultural crossroads. Mounted on a custom display stand, the fragment stands as both an archaeological relic and a testament to the syncretic art of Gandhara.

Provenance: ex-old private Ohio, USA collection; ex-J. Tanenbaum, Toronto, Canada; ex-Frank Breuer, acquired in the 1970s
