A pleasant painting by self-taught artist George Arthur Hays depicting a pair of cows standing in a pond or stream in the foreground with a herd of cattle shown further off in the background. The brown bovine gently grooms her black-spotted partner, who looks off to the herd in the distance as the tranquil sky and lush greenery reflects across the water. Skillful use of light and form creates a serene composition, all set in a custom frame with suspension wire on verso for easy display. Size of painting: 17.5" W x 11.25" H (44.4 cm x 28.6 cm); frame: 23" W x 16.5" H (58.4 cm x 41.9 cm)

- Condition: Signed in lower right. Set in custom frame with some chipping and small losses to frame, as well as loosening at edges; none of which affects painting. Nick to canvas in lower right near signature and some light rubbing near the edges in areas. Age-expected wear with patina throughout. Clear imagery and nice preservation of pigments. Suspension wire on verso for display.
