Description:

MIOCENE PERIOD:  23 million years ago.  Czech Republic.  Petrified wood in its natural form is MUCH LESS prevalent on the market compared to sliced and polished examples.  Substantial intact large fossil petrified logs that depict natural anatomy and grain IN the wood are very uncommon.  Most petrified logs are casts of the original log shape that has been filled with stone (agate in most cases) over time.  The interior fiber and cellular structure is virtually to completely lost because of this.  On the contrary, this EXTRAORDINARY example above exhibits detailed fossilized grain and internal wood anatomical structures as seen in the close-up images above, especially of the ends of the log.  Typical petrified logs do not display this and rather, only show the outer crude detail of the former tree surface and internal stone colorations of the wood which is replaced with agate.  Here we can actually see INTO the wood by the display of the linear grain and growth rings!  The wood did not disintegrate and become filled with agate like normal petrified wood but instead, became petrified on a cellular level and thereby, retains detail rarely seen. he entire log also became worn by the elements at some point in its life as a fossil and the result is not only a shockingly beautiful large fossil log to look at but the feel of this piece is even more incredible. It begs to be touched and the silky surface is as mesmerizing to feel as it appears. If you are impressed with the photos, seeing this amazing specimen in person would leave you speechless because the photos cannot show the REFLECTIVITY of the grain and how it shimmers in the light. Rare location and color. 21.25" long x 15" wide x 6" thick.
