Description:

Giovanni Zuccarelli (Italian, 1846-1891). Set Design for a Gothic Hall. Watercolor and black ink on paper, n.d. Signed at lower right. A wonderful set design by Italian artist Giovanni Zuccarelli - a favorite artist of Verdi, who designed several sets for his penultimate opera Otello. The dynamic composition presents a wall arcade of gothic arches leading to a back wall of decorative wood paneling and relief molding featuring quatrefoils, geometric motifs, and coats of arms. Just beneath the coffered ceiling is a row of tondos filled with busts of men, perhaps philosophers, saints, kings, or other people of great import. All is rendered in delicate, thin lines with an impressive attentiveness to detail and form with exquisite treatment to the silhouetting and structuring of each architectural element captured. Size of painting: 6.3" L x 4.8" W (16 cm x 12.2 cm); of frame: 10.75" L x 9.5" W (27.3 cm x 24.1 cm)

A lot of 4 watercolors by Giovanni Zuccarelli hammered $10,000 (now equivalent to $12,314.21) at Sotheby's New York on January 29th, 2020 (lot 124, "Old Master Drawings").
