Glenn Scott Kuhnly (American, 1932-2012). Teepees in snow. Watercolor on paper, n.d. Signed at lower right. A luminous winter scene by Glenn Scott Kuhnly, rendered with the artist's characteristic discipline and sensitivity to atmosphere. The composition opens onto a snow-blanketed field edged with bare-limbed trees, their stark silhouettes guiding the eye toward a distant cluster of teepees that rise gently against violet mountains. Above, a soft wash of pink spreads across the sky, casting a delicate glow that suffuses the landscape with a sense of calm and quietude. Size of painting: 38.5" W x 21" H (97.8 cm x 53.3 cm); of frame: 52.3" W x 34.5" H (132.8 cm x 87.6 cm)
Kuhnly, a pillar of the Escondido arts community, was admired for his ability to capture the openness and light of the California landscape. Primarily a watercolorist, he painted daily with a craftsman's rigor and a free spirit's eye for beauty. His works often drew upon the themes of wide horizons, coastal waters, and rural backcountry, and here he conveys the expansive serenity of a snowbound world with equal mastery. The present watercolor demonstrates why Kuhnly's paintings found lasting appeal among collectors: his subtle handling of color, especially in the glowing pink sky, lends a sense of both stillness and vitality, transforming a simple winter view into a moment of wonder.
About the artist: Glenn Scott Kuhnly was a celebrated watercolorist and painter who became a cornerstone of the Escondido, California arts community. Born in Long Island, New York in 1939 and raised in Huntington Beach, Kuhnly began studying with Millard Sheets at the age of ten and later earned both his BFA and MFA from California State University, Long Beach (1957-1964). Kuhnly supported himself entirely through his art, establishing a studio in the Escondido Arcade in 1969 that became his permanent gallery. Known for his discipline and good humor, he painted daily and was admired for his generosity toward fellow artists. His favored subjects included fishing boats, California seascapes, landscapes, and vintage automobiles, reflecting his lifelong love of the ocean, open spaces, and classic cars. A dedicated plein-air painter, Kuhnly traveled frequently with fellow artists, creating works that captured the ease and adventure of California's coast and back country. His works are represented in collections including the National Automotive and Truck Museum of the United States, the Columbia River Maritime Museum, and the Coos Art Museum. Remembered for both his wit and his artistry, Kuhnly left behind a body of work that celebrates the character and beauty of the California landscape, as well as a legacy as a mentor and friend within his community.
