Glenn Scott Kuhnly (American, 1932-2012). "Winter Encampment" watercolor on paper, n.d. Signed at lower right. A hush falls over the land in Glenn Scott Kuhnly's "Winter Encampment", a watercolor that captures the quiet dignity of a snow-covered prairie and the still presence of tipis beneath a lavender dawn. The scene is composed with lyrical restraint: bare trees stretch skyward like silent witnesses, soft grasses huddle beneath powdery drifts, and subtle shadows drift across the frozen earth. Three ochre-toned tipis rise like warm-hearted sentinels in the cold, their simplicity echoing both solitude and shelter. Primarily known for his vivid maritime scenes and vintage Americana, Kuhnly was also drawn to the breadth and stillness of inland landscapes. Here, he shows a masterful understanding of space and temperature - not only the crystalline feel of a subzero morning, but the deep emotional resonance of open, unpeopled land. Size of painting: 19.25" W x 13.25" H (48.9 cm x 33.7 cm); of frame: 30.5" W x 24.5" H (77.5 cm x 62.2 cm)
This painting reflects the artist's signature balance of discipline and freedom: his lifelong work ethic honed in Escondido, California, where he kept studio hours like clockwork, painting daily with a steady hand and a spirited soul.
Though best remembered in San Diego County for his wit, mentorship, and love of vintage cars and the sea, Kuhnly occasionally ventured into plains and backcountry scenes that revealed a quieter, more contemplative side of his vision. In "Winter Encampment", he distills a poetic essence from the landscape - one that speaks not through drama, but through atmosphere, memory, and grace.
A lifelong working artist and beloved figure in the Escondido arts community, Glenn Scott Kuhnly was known as much for his discipline and craftsmanship as for his wit and generosity. Born in Long Island, New York, and raised in Huntington Beach, Kuhnly began studying art under Millard Sheets at the age of ten and went on to earn both his BFA and MFA from California State University at Long Beach. In 1969, he established a studio on Grand Avenue in Escondido, which became his permanent gallery and daily workspace for more than four decades.
Primarily a watercolorist, Kuhnly supported his family through his art, painting California landscapes, fishing boats, vintage cars, and quiet rural scenes. Though serious about his craft, he was remembered for his humor, mentorship, and a playful spirit that found its way into hidden messages behind his paintings. He exhibited widely, contributed to numerous charitable causes, and was active in several regional art associations. His work is held in the collections of the National Automotive and Truck Museum, the Columbia River Maritime Museum, and the Coos Art Museum. Kuhnly painted nearly every day of his life, often saying he felt lucky never to have had a real job.
