Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A beautiful hand-carved stone bowl with deep, straight sides, an incurving rim, and four round, nub-like legs. The sides have incised vertical lines along their lengths, creating a scalloped appearance. The stone chosen by the artisan who made this bowl is the real star here - an absolutely gorgeous pale, creamy green, with bands of darker green and green-grey flowing through it and small, mottled black manganese deposits from age. This item was made in the west Mexican shaft tomb tradition, and may have been created to hold offerings or to be placed into a grave to provision the dead. Size: 4" L x 4.375" H (10.2 cm x 11.1 cm)

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex Poway, California, USA collection
