Description:

Eastern Mediterranean, Phoenician to Roman period, circa 5th century BCE – 2nd century CE. A striking and colorful composite strand of ancient glass beads, featuring a diverse array of Phoenician and Roman period polychrome elements, strung together as a wearable necklace. The beads are of varied types, including millefiori, eye beads, dotted and ribbed forms, and examples with wavy, combed, or marbled patterns, showcasing the ingenuity and stylistic range of ancient Eastern Mediterranean glassmakers. The beads vary in shape and size — including biconical, globular, and barrel forms — and display an array of tones: cobalt, opaque white, turquoise, amber, and maroon, often highlighted with contrasting trails or rosettes. Size: 29" L x .5" W (73.7 cm x 1.3 cm)

The Phoenicians were pioneers in early glass-working techniques, and their legacy was continued and expanded under Roman rule. This necklace reflects that continuity — a spectrum of bead styles spanning centuries, crafted using techniques such as core-forming, winding, and trail application. The result is a piece not only of adornment but of remarkable historical resonance
