Description:

Ancient. Egypt, Third Intermediate to Late Dynastic Period, ca. 1070 to 332 BCE. An elegant necklace made from ancient Egyptian faience beads - over a hundred navy blue (almost black) seed beads with thirty-three long, cylindrical, blue-green beads interspersed along the strand at regular intervals. Egyptian faience was known as "tjehnet" to the ancient Egyptians, meaning brilliant or dazzling. It was made by grinding quartz or sand crystals together with various elements, including copper oxide, which gave it its distinct blue/green tint. Faience beads were used in everyday jewelry and also used to make burial nets to be placed over mummies. Modern stringing makes this very wearable! Gold-plated sterling silver findings. Length of strand: 18" L (45.7 cm)

Provenance: private Simonian collection, Switzerland, acquired before 1973
