Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Panama, Gran Cocle culture, ca. 800 to 1200 CE. This charming pottery dish is painted with an abstract creature. Artists of this culture often created "split representations," where the image depicts more than one animal - this piece may represent a composite of a turtle and a catfish with whiskers. The dish features a broad, shallow basin resting on a small ring foot. The surface is slipped in beige, contrasting with the orange, purple, and black pigments. The use of purple is indicative of the Conte or Maracas style. Size: 7.25" Diameter x 2.25" H (18.4 cm x 5.7 cm).

Provenance: Estate of Peter H. Tillou Collection, thence by descent. Acquired in the 1990s, collection # 233. Appraised by Marianne Huber in 2014.
