Description:

Egypt, Ptolemaic period, ca. 2nd century BCE. A lovely marble fragment depicting the muscular torso of the ancient Greek hero Herakles with his signature Nemean Lion hide hanging behind his right arm. Herakles, or Hercules as he was known to the Romans, held a significant, albeit complex, position in Ptolemaic Egypt. As a quintessential Greek hero renowned for his strength, courage, and civilizing deeds, he was readily embraced by the Greek ruling class and settlers who arrived with the Ptolemies. His image and mythology reinforced their Hellenic identity in a foreign land. Moreover, the Ptolemies strategically syncretized Greek deities with their Egyptian counterparts to foster unity among their diverse subjects. In this context, Herakles was sometimes associated with Egyptian deities embodying strength and protection, such as Khonsu. Size: 2.3" W x 2.3" H (5.8 cm x 5.8 cm); 4.1" H (10.4 cm) on included custom stand.

While not achieving the same level of widespread, state-sponsored cult status as the newly created Serapis, Herakles remained a popular figure, particularly within the Greek community, symbolizing heroic ideals and a connection to their ancestral heritage. His presence is attested through archaeological finds like inscriptions and depictions on various artifacts, highlighting his enduring appeal in Ptolemaic Egypt.
