Description:

Magna Graecia, hellenistic, ca. late 3rd to mid 2nd century BCE. Large orange ware terracotta transport amphora having a slightly tapered cylindrical body terminating to a blunt pointed base, rounded shoulder with two opposing applied strap handles to the neck, wide mouth with outwardly rolled rim. Custom black hand-forged fancy iron display stand, with four suspended ring handles. A beautiful example.

The pointed base — one of the most recognizable features of the ancient amphora — was a functional innovation that distributed the weight of the heavy vessel and allowed it to be maneuvered by a single handler. At 39 inches, this is an exceptionally large and imposing example. Displayed on a custom black hand-forged iron stand with four suspended ring handles. Size: 39”H x 7.25”W (99.1 x 18.4cm).

Provenance: Ex. Sumer Gallery, NYC., Henry Anavian, then to family by descent, purportedly acquired at Sotheby’s.
