Description:

Greece, Hellenistic Period, ca. late 4th to 1st century BCE. A gorgeous stamp seal bead, finely sculpted from banded agate to feature a pair of confronting women; one with a crescent moon headdress and wielding a bow indicating she may be Artemis (Roman Diana), the Greek goddess of the hunt. Both draped in ankle-length robes, the slender ladies bend arms at elbows and hold out their hands, seemingly engrossed in conversation. The convex verso gives the bead a hemispherical form, and the lateral drill hole allows it to be worn as a bead or a pendant. Size: 0.5" W x 0.6" H (1.3 cm x 1.5 cm)

Provenance: private San Francisco, California, USA collection, acquired 1970s to 2000s
