Description:

Magna Graecia, South Italic Colonies, Apulia, ca. 340 to 325 BCE. A wheel-thrown pottery vessel known as a pelike (wine container). The elegant form is composed of a rotund piriform body atop a squat foot, a corseted neck, a thick rim with a funnel mouth, and a pair of strap handles arching between neck and midsection. The entire vessel is colored with lustrous glaze of a jet-black hue, and some abraded reveal the original buffware color beneath.
