Description:

Ancient Greece, Archaic Period, ca. 6th century BCE. A set of 2 hand-carved alabaster vessels known as alabastrons. The first vessel features an elongated, egg-shaped body surmounted with a thick neck and an everted rim, and the larger vessel bears a conical body with a petite base on the bottom and incised ringlets around the base of where the neck was at one time. These vessels would have held scented oil and, based on paintings on pottery, were frequently owned by women for use after bathing. Size of largest (w/o rim): 2.2" W x 5.6" H (5.6 cm x 14.2 cm); (vessel w/ rim): 1.8" W x 4.625" H (4.6 cm x 11.7 cm)

Provenance: private London, UK collection; ex-private collection of Mrs. B. Ellison, a deceased former member of the Egyptian Exploration Fund, bought in the 1940s, Cairo and London

  • Condition: Larger vessel missing neck and rim and shown; round-bottomed vessel with repair and possible restoration to small area of rim and midsection of body. Each vessel with minor nicks, abrasions, and pitting, otherwise in nice condition. Great stone color throughout.
