Description:

Ancient Greece, Archaic Period, ca. 6th to 5th century BCE. A solid bronze statuette of a horse cast via the lost wax process, standing with a curved, sway back upon relatively short but sturdy legs, with a very long tail extending to its hooves and incised detailing of its mane. Sculpture of this period is generally small in scale, and figures have simplified schematic shapes as we see in this example. A wonderful piece representing the beginning of Greek figural art when the Hellenic penchant for naturalism was in its embryonic stages. Black wood-block stand. Size: horse measures 2.5" W x 1.625" H (6.4 cm x 4.1 cm); 2.625" W x 2" H (6.7 cm x 5.1 cm) on stand

Provenance: private Moore collection, Denver, Colorado, USA, acquired thirty years ago; purportedly ex-Sotheby's
