Description:

**Originally Listed At $2300**

Ancient Greece, Archaic, ca. 650 to 480 BCE. A fragment of a mold-made terracotta protome depicting a female head, wearing a himation drawn up and over her head with round earrings, with a scalloped fringe section of bangs which elegantly frame her face and one remaining ear. Beautiful open, almond-shaped, lidded eyes, a relatively naturalistic nose, a nicely contoured cheek, a rounded chin, and a characteristic Archaic smile give her an aura of ancient glamour. Although the exact significance of this smile is unknown, scholars suggest that the ancient Greeks associated it with good health and well being. A wonderful example from this early period. Lucite display not included. Metal bar previously inserted into reserve side for hanging. Size: 6.25" W x 6.35" H (15.9 cm x 16.1 cm).

Provenance: ex-collection of Sello, Switzerland, which in the 1990s passed by inheritance to his daughter, Mrs. Conti, Locarno, Switzerland, until 2003
