Ancient Greece, Athens, ca. 550 to 500 BCE. A large and impressive Attic black figure Type B belly amphora with characteristic continuous profile from lip to foot, round handles, straight lip to the mouth, and a gorgeous convex profile with the one-piece foot or echinus. This form is quite old and dates back to the seventh century, making this one of the last examples created as they were made until the mid-fifth century. Beyond its exquisite form, this amphora boasts two panels replete with iconography. Side A depicts a central helmeted warrior, possibly Achilles, holding a shield decorated with three white dots in his left hand, a spear in his right, fiercely armed and dangerous, flanked by two standing draped male attendants. Side B depicts a nude male warrior holding a long spear in his left hand flanked by two other male attendants, with crimson bands above and on the groundline and rays emanating from the base. A superb example of this beautiful form, replete with rich iconography. Size: 8" W x 11.25" H (20.3 cm x 28.6 cm)
