Description:

Greece, Athens (Attic), ca. 5th Century BCE. An exceptional red figure stemmed kylix with twin upraised loop handles attached to a shallow bowl supported by an elegant pedestal foot, all upon a concave, tiered round foot with a red center. The painted figural program features a young woman sitting on a tripod stool playing a lyre, while a spotted cat looks up at her. The presence of the lyre and the cat suggests that this vessel depicts our beloved goddess Artemis (Roman Diana). Although cats were not as popular in Greek imagery as dogs or horses, the Greeks considered the Egyptian cat goddess Bast to be linked to Artemis, the Greek goddess of the hunt. Artemis was also oftentimes depicting holding a lyre. Size: 11.25" W handlespanx 3.625" H (28.6 cm x 9.2 cm)
