Greek Attic Lekythos w/ Black Palmettes

Description:

Mediterranean, Greece, Attic, ca. 500–450 BCE. A terracotta lekythos with a slender neck, flared mouth, single strap handle, and raised disk foot, decorated in the West Slope or sub-geometric style with repeating palmette and floral motifs in black and brown paint against a pale buff ground, framed by horizontal banding at the shoulder and base. The lekythos was the standard Greek vessel for olive oil and perfumed unguents, commonly placed in tombs as offerings to the deceased, and this example retains strong decorative detail with good surface preservation. Comes with a on a black marble display base. Size: 1.6" W x 4.75" H (4.1 cm W x 12.1 cm H).

  • Condition: Good. Neck and small part of the strap handle is restored with new material. Chips to the foot. Fading and losses to pigments, but good remaining motifs, with earthen deposits.
