Description:

Greece, ca. 500 BCE. This is a small terracotta lekythos (oil flask) with black-figure painting. This is in the classic style of a lekythos, with a narrow body and a single handle attached to the neck of the vessel. There is black decoration on the handle and around the shoulder and base as well as delicate paintings of what appear to be chickens; although their tail feathers somewhat resemble those of peacocks, those birds were not known to the Greeks until the conquests of Alexander (ca. 330 BCE). Lekythos were used for keeping olive oil, which was ubiquitous and used for a wide variety of purposes in the Classical World. A small object like this one was almost certainly used in the household, and the wear behind the handle may indicate frequent use. Size: 5-3/4" x 3" diameter at widest point.

  • Condition: The piece has a small (around 1") repair to the back (below the handle) and has also been repaired around the base and the handle, but the latter two repairs are non-obvious. The artwork has wear particularly below the handle, but is still clear.
