Description:

Greece, Athens, Attic, ca. 510 to 490 BCE. A wondrous Attic pottery foot depicting an expressive actor's mask, created with the black figure technique. To create the dramatic visage on the tondo of this plate, the artist applied a slip that turned black in the firing process, while the background was left the color of the clay. In the mighty cultural and political power that was Athens, three major theatrical genres emerged: tragedy, comedy, and the satyr play. In addition, theatrical productions comprised part of a festival called Dionysia honoring the god Dionysus. Perhaps this bearded figure is an abstract representation of the legendary god of the vine, the grape harvest, wine, revelry, and theater! Size: 4.5" L x 3.5" W (11.4 cm x 8.9 cm)
