Magna Graecia, South Italic colonies, ca. 4th century BCE. A mold-formed pottery oil lamp with a recessed footed base, rounded walls, a tall fill hole with an incised ring around the rim meant for a lid, an applied ring handle, and a projecting wick spout. The lamp is covered in a lustrous black glaze which has developed faint areas of silvery iridescence in scattered areas. Size: 4.125" L x 2.125" W x 2.25" H (10.5 cm x 5.4 cm x 5.7 cm).

  • Condition: Small area of restoration to one side of body with resurfacing and overpainting along break lines. Minor nicks and abrasions commensurate with age, with light fading to areas of glaze. Nice earthen deposits and faint silver iridescence throughout.
