Description:

Greece, Classical period, ca. 5th century BCE. A quietly elegant artifact from Classical Greece, this 5th century BCE bronze mirror reflects the refinement of Hellenic craftsmanship. Cast in a clean circular form with a pointed tang for insertion into a now-lost handle, the mirror once bore a polished face that served both practical grooming and symbolic ritual. Though the surface has oxidized to a mottled tapestry of green and brown, its silhouette remains strikingly intact. Mirrors such as this were essential personal items in elite Greek households and often accompanied women into the grave, a testament to their role in both daily life and death rituals. The faint incised lines on the reverse may record ownership or later markings from collection history. In its simplicity, the mirror speaks to Classical ideals of balance, proportion, and quiet sophistication - a personal possession transformed by time into a vessel of cultural memory. Size: 6" W x 6.8" H (15.2 cm x 17.3 cm)
