Description:

Southern Italy, Campania, Magna Graecia, ca. 4th century BCE. A graceful black-glazed oinochoe of Campanian make, its form echoing the poetic curve of a song poured from bronze lips. The vessel rises from a ring foot to a globular body, finely fluted with vertical ribs that lend both tactility and rhythm to its surface. Above this balanced mass, the shoulder gives way to a tall, tapering neck and a wide trefoil spout, designed for easy pouring at symposia and sacred rites alike. The tubular handle curves upward with fluid motion, bridging neck and shoulder in a loop of classical elegance. The entire surface is covered in a rich, lustrous black gloss slip, characteristic of Campanian blackware pottery - a southern Italian variant inspired by Attic prototypes but distinctly regional in execution and sheen. Time has softened its luster, revealing areas where the slip has thinned to a warm terra-cotta beneath, its wear telling stories of use and centuries passed. Size: 5.5" L x 5.3" W x 8" H (14 cm x 13.5 cm x 20.3 cm)

Such oinochoai were practical vessels used for pouring wine or water and were common in both domestic and funerary settings throughout the Greek colonies of Magna Graecia. The trefoil mouth, with its triple-lobed design, allowed the user to direct the pour with control and style - ideal for the performative rituals of Greek social drinking. This piece exemplifies the cross-cultural dialogue between Hellenic craftsmanship and Italic adaptation, a blend of elegance and utility that remains enduringly appealing.
