Description:

Magna Graecia, South Italy, Campania, ca. 4th century BCE. An interesting example of a squat epichysis with a compressed, spool-shaped body bearing a corseted midsection, a pair of protruding rims, a rounded top that tapers to a narrow cylindrical neck, a trefoil-style pouring spout, and a high-arching handle joining spout to upper body. The top of the body is embellished with a delicate register of seven petite palmettes joined along the stems with drooping rungs. Lustrous layers of jet-black glaze envelop the vessel save for the midsection and beneath the foot, and attractive silvery iridescence has formed in some areas. An elegant vessel from ancient Campania! Size: 3.25" W x 3.75" H (8.3 cm x 9.5 cm).
