Description:

Ancient Greece, Hellenistic Period, ca. 4th to 1st century BCE. A fine carnelian intaglio of ovoid form, hand-carved to depict a nude male figure striding left and carrying a spear in his left hand and in his right an indecipherable staff with a cross-like finial - perhaps intended as a trident indicating he is Poseidon or as a caduceus signifying that he is Hermes. His bearded head is shown in profile and crowned by a wreath or diadem. Size: 0.6" L x 0.5" W (1.5 cm x 1.3 cm)
