Description:

Ancient Greece, Classical period, ca. 6th to 5th century BCE. A remarkable copper statuette of a standing bull exhibiting a strong body as it stands atop thick legs. The humped back leads to a protruding head with a rounded snout, petaloid ears, and slightly curved horns. The incised facial features are comprised of annular eyes, delineated nostrils, and a slit-form mouth. Animal votives like this one were popular throughout the Classical world, and bull figures of pottery and bronze were often given as offerings at the Temple of Zeus of Olympia. Bulls are believed to symbolize power, signifying virility and masculinity, qualities prized above all others in ancient Greece. Size: 3.4" L x 1.6" W x 2.1" H (8.6 cm x 4.1 cm x 5.3 cm)
