Description:

Greece, Corinth, Archaic Period, ca. 6th century BCE. A beautiful kothon with a smooth, burnished, cream-color slipped surface and delicate black and red decorative lines around the rim and interior. A loop handle emerges gracefully from the shoulder and the round body stands on a short, pronounced foot. Size: 7.05" L x 5.5" W x 2.2" H (17.9 cm x 14 cm x 5.6 cm)

The kothon (or plemochoe, or exaleiptron) is a vessel form that was produced in Corinth from 6th to 5th century BCE and was exported throughout Greece. They were designed to hold liquids without allowing them to spill over the sides. Unlike much preserved pottery from this time period, they are not commonly found in graves, but rather in temples where they were given as offerings.
