Description:

Greece, Corinth, ca. 7th to 6th century BCE. A pretty, decorated pottery skyphos, a dual-handled, deep cup with a low flanged base, used for drinking wine. Two horizontal loop handles project neatly from just underneath the unpronounced rim. The design originated in Corinth and spread throughout the Greek world. This example has its interior painted a deep, earthy red, while its exterior is a paler, more orange-red, and painted with dark red and deep brown standing birds - probably swans, or maybe geese - and circles divided into four quadrants. Thin incisions create further details on the birds, including wavy feathers. During this time, Corinthian pottery showed the influence of eastern trade connections with the city - art with stylized plants and animal friezes, inspired by Egypt and Assyria. Size: 6.35" W x 3.55" H (16.1 cm x 9 cm)
