Description:

Ancient Greece, Boeotia, Geometric Period, ca. late 8th to 7th century BCE. A petite wheel-thrown pottery basket known as a kalathos with a flat base, gradually expanding walls, and a thin, gently flared rim surrounding the deep basin. The beige-slipped exterior surfaces are adorned with concentric bands along the upper and lower body, and the midsection is decorated with trios of zigzagging vertical lines. The kalathos (also calathus) was a large pottery vessel used as a basket for carrying fruit, wool, or other physical items. The scaled-down size of this example suggests it was perhaps a votive basket meant to be filled with offerings. Size: 3.625" W x 2.8" H (9.2 cm x 7.1 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Portuguese collection; ex-Nicolas Kronwall, Arizona, USA; acquired from Harmer Rooke Galleries (their inventory label on base 262); acquired at Helios Gallery
