Description:

Ancient Greece, Hellenistic Period, ca. 3rd to 1st century BCE. This stunning ornament is crafted from a gold and silver alloy with 78.6% gold (equivalent to 18K+) and 19.6% silver, making it technically an electrum composition! The exquisite piece features delicate granulation on both sides, with a wire having a reeded edge applied to the exterior rim, folded inward at the gap - possibly indicating where an attachment loop for suspension once existed. While this may have been a pendant, the intricate decoration on both sides suggests it could have also been an earring or hair ornament. Size: 1.6" Diameter (4.1 cm); gold quality: 78.6% (equivalent to 18K+); silver quality: 19.6%; weight: 11.9 grams

Provenance: private London, UK collection; ex-private collection, Oxfordshire 1980s.
