Description:

Greece, Hellenistic, ca. 3rd to 1st century BCE. A splendid pottery head of Athena - Roman Minerva - the Greek goddess of wisdom, medicine, art, commerce, and military victory, here depicted in her warrior guise, donning a Corinthian helmet and noble visage. This regal bust bears a remarkable resemblance to Athena Giustiniani, a marble sculpture of Athena now in the Vatican Museums - inventory 2223 - that was based on a Greek bronze from the late 5th to early 4th century BCE. Size: 2.4" W x 4.5" H (6.1 cm x 11.4 cm); 6" H (15.2 cm) on included custom stand.
