Description:

Ancient Greece, Hellenistic period, ca. 4th to 3rd century BCE. A pair of terracotta female figures, each modeled in the round and clothed in long, enveloping drapery characteristic of the Hellenistic period. The taller figure is depicted standing in contrapposto, wearing a himation drawn closely about the body, with the folds rendered in faint relief. Her head is surmounted by a cylindrical polos, suggesting a divine or ritual identity, possibly a goddess or priestess. The smaller figure presents with a more naturalistic treatment of drapery, her garment cascading in pleated folds to the base. She is veiled, her mantle drawn over the head in a gesture associated with modesty, marriage, or funerary symbolism. Both figures exhibit the restrained yet evocative style typical of Hellenistic terracotta statuettes, which were often produced as votive offerings or household cult objects. The figures retain areas of smoothing and detail, though time and burial have softened their features. Size: 1.8" W x 5.3" H (4.6 cm x 13.5 cm); 5.8" H (14.7 cm) on included custom stand.

The figures retain areas of smoothing and detail, though time and burial have softened their features. Comparable examples are held in the Louvre, the British Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where similar veiled and crowned female figures are interpreted as attendants, deities, or symbolic representations of ideals such as fertility, chastity, or divine favor.
