Description:

Ancient Greece, Hellenistic period, ca. 2nd century BCE. Standing upon a circular base, a striking terracotta figure donning a flowing robe over 'her' ample (perhaps pregnant) form, carrying a bag over 'her' right shoulder. Over 'her' head she wears an actor mask with a forlorn expression. Interestingly, this female character was most likely played by a male actor. Traditionally, the roles of women in Greek drama were both conceived by men as all known ancient Greek playwrights were men, and the actors who played female roles were most often male as well. A wonderful example representing the legendary world of ancient Greek drama. Size: 6.5" H (16.5 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Private New York Collection, from Bavarian private collection G.P., acquired in the 1980s
