Description:

Greece, possibly eastern empire, ca. 6th century BCE. A Greek terracotta figure in the form of a reclining male draped in long himation. He lays with his head raised, the left elbow resting upon a pillow, and right hand on his knees. It appears that he is holding a rhyton in his left hand - certainly filled with wine. Size: 2.25" L x 1.925" H (5.7 cm x 4.9 cm)

Greek pottery often depicts symposia, or social gatherings where men would recline on couches (klinai) to drink, converse, and enjoy music and entertainment, with scenes of reclining banqueters and revelers being a common motif. The symposium was a traditional social gathering and convivial banquet where wealthy Greek men would drink together, reclining on couches. Symposia were usually held in the andron (the citizen quarters of the household), with participants reclining on pillowed couches against the walls. Men would discuss philosophy and literature, some recited poetry or played music, and they would drink wine.

A less detailed example of a very similar terracotta was uncovered at a Greek site in Crimea along the north coast of the Black Sea.
