Description:

Northwestern Greece, Illyria, Archaic period, ca. late 7th to 6th centuries BCE. A war helmet made of hammered bronze sheet, with a rectilinear opening for the face, long, pointed cheek pieces , edges with decorative border of applied circles, horizontal ribbing on the forehead framing the upper facial opening, and twin parallel ridges on the crown, each flanked by a group of three later ribs in low relief, engraved band between. The back and sides flare out to guard the neck and are lined with entire edge lined with rivets - used in securing a leather lining. There is also a small ring at the rear and a protruding pin at the front for the attachment of a plume. This example has a rich, blue-green patina and is a somewhat more impressive example of Type II, variant A, with a more pronounced dome-like form. Size: 10" L x 7" W x 10.5" H (25.4 cm x 17.8 cm x 26.7 cm); 16" H (40.6 cm) on included custom stand.

These helmets were particularly popular in northern Greece, in the province of Illyria, in the modern day Balkans. They were made for hoplites, the citizen-soldiers of the Greek city states, who often furnished their own bronze armor. As a result, regional styles developed and there is a great deal of variation in shape and form. With the actual rivets and plume attachments, one can assume this example was used in battle.
We have handled an Illyrian helmet that showed a distinct blade crease down the top. I am of the opinion that this helmet (and its owner) was struck from behind resulting in the damage we see. The doomed warrior then likely fell forward causing the additional damage to the front.

This piece has been tested using XRF analysis. Results show it is contructed of bronze in a "formula" consistent with bronzes from this time period.
