Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Magna Graecia, South Italic Colonies, Apulia, near Ignazia, ca. 340 to 325 BCE; Greece, Hellenistic Period, ca. late 3rd to 1st century BCE. A pair of pottery vessels: a Gnathian amphora and a Megarian bowl. First, the amphora boasts a classic silhouette enveloped in black pigment and adorned with the head and wings of a left-facing Nike - Roman Victoria - flanked by a pair of palmettes in fugitive pigments of white, yellow, and red. Horizontal registers of parallel striations, crested waves, zigzags, and dotted motifs are above the deity, while linear, tongued, and dotted patterns embellish the area below. Alternatively, the bowl features a flared rim and a hemispherical body stamped with an impressive low relief design of ferns, petals, birds, flowers, and tongued motif. Liberal remains of black and red pigments additionally grace the surface. Size: 4.8" W x 7.7" H (12.2 cm x 19.6 cm)

  • Condition: Both have been repaired with break lines visible in some areas. Amphora also has some restoration and repainting, while bowl has chipping and minor losses along break lines. Both have chipping to rims, as well nicks and abrasions, as expected with age. Liberal remains of pigment on bowl. Otherwise, both are very nice with great remaining details.
