Ancient Greece, Athens, ca. early 5th century BCE. A lovely pottery lekythos boasting a classical silhouette and adorned with black-figure decoration of a Dionysian scene of 4 figures dancing amongst vines. Sitting upon a discoid foot, the ancient vessel presents a traditional form with a conical rim, an attenuated neck, an arched handle, a flat shoulder, and a tapering body. A pair of dotted bands embellishes the area above the figures, while 2 horizontal bands lie below them, and 2 rows of rays decorate the shoulders. Black pigment additionally envelops the exterior of the rim, the base, the top of the handle, and the top and bottom periphery of the foot. Size: 2.3" Diameter x 6.7" H (5.8 cm x 17 cm)
This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full printed and bound report is available to the buyer upon request.
Provenance: ex-Nancy and Dr. E.F. Simpson collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired from 1970 to 2000

- Condition: Repairs to neck, top of shoulder and handle with break lines visible. Area of loss to shoulder and chipping to rim and handle. Some nicks and abrasions, as expected with age. Otherwise, very nice with great remaining pigments and detail. TL holes to base and underside of handle. Collection label on base.
